Reflection from Week 3 of Inktober

The struggle to come up with ideas for prompts started on Friday, October 19, 2018. I sat there at Starbucks struggling to come up with a sketch that would work for the prompt, Breakable. I tried some image searches and finally landed on something that I liked and could fit. Since then each day’s prompt has been a struggle to come up with a concept. I have a couple of theories as to why this is for me:

  • Getting empty on my creative bank account so it is hard to come up with ideas from what remains. (Need to spend more time filling up the bank account with studying images and more sketches.)
  • The duration of the challenge of inktober, with pushing through with a new sketch each day. (I have completed 22 days of the 31-day challenge.)
  • Working on two prompt lists. (I have learned that I am only going to work on one list next year.)
  •  Lack of a theme. (Themes can help you with a starting point to base your sketches, without one you are starting with the blank page each time.)

Now I am not using these as excuses or reasons to quit, but I am using them as lessons learned. I plan on completing inktober for both prompt lists while applying the lessons I have learned.

I have not thought of a theme to stick with, but I will research possible ideas for a given prompt the day before. By trying to come up with a concept and then finding reference that supports it as well trying to keep the sketch simple enough that I can complete it with the time I have available each day.

After inktober is complete this year I will work on my weaknesses I have found during this challenge and focus on each for 12 weeks. What lessons have you learned from inktober this year? Do you have any plans for improving your work for next year?
